How the calculation works

Net revenue is the price the customer pays minus the VAT or GST inside it: price ÷ (1 + VAT rate). On amazon.com the listed price has no tax inside it, because Amazon collects US sales tax on top as a marketplace facilitator, so the VAT field is 0.

Landed cost is the unit cost plus freight, prep and import duty. Amazon fees are the referral fee (a percentage of the selling price, commonly 15% but 8–17% depending on the category) plus the FBA fulfilment fee, which depends on size and weight. Add your advertising cost per unit, because most new listings need PPC to sell.

Profit per unit = net revenue − landed cost − referral fee − FBA fee − ads. Margin is profit ÷ net revenue. ROI is profit ÷ landed cost, which tells you how hard your inventory money is working.

A quick rule of thumb

Many private-label sellers look for a landed cost below about 25% of the selling price and a margin above 25–30% after ads. These are not rules, but if a product is far below them, small changes in fees, returns or ad costs can wipe out the profit.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate Amazon FBA profit?

Take the price the customer pays, remove any VAT or GST included in it, then subtract your landed cost (unit cost, freight, prep and duty), the referral fee, the FBA fulfilment fee and your advertising cost per unit.

Is the Amazon referral fee charged on the price including VAT?

Yes. On Amazon's UK and EU marketplaces the referral fee is calculated on the total sales price the customer pays, which includes VAT.

What is a good profit margin for Amazon FBA?

Many sellers aim for 25–30% or more after advertising, but the right number depends on your category, return rate and how much ad spend the product needs.

Why is there no VAT on Amazon.com prices?

US prices are shown without sales tax. Amazon calculates and collects state sales tax at checkout as a marketplace facilitator, so it is not taken out of your selling price.
